How Do I Publish My Own Book?

Print on Demand Technology Turns Self-Publishing from Myth to Fact

There’s just something great about seeing your name on a book that you spent months working on. And when that book is on display in a local bookshop along with many others, the knowledge that you are a published author can feel very good.

The problem is, publishing your own book can be so stressful and so expensive. It is a gamble at the very least especially if you intend to distribute your material for the mass market. Unless you’re already a successful and established writer – someone who has a definite audience following – it’s going to be quite difficult to break into the existing market and get publishers to take in your material. After all, each book is an investment and they are at risk of losing their investment if they spend on something that wouldn’t sell in the end.

The business of self-publishing

Enter self-publishing. This concept has been around for quite some time now but it is not so popular because of the high cost attached to it. In this process, you don’t rely on a third-party publisher to invest in you, market it and get it sold in bookstores. You will be dependent on your own finances – that is, you will be paying for everything. After writing the book, you will be its editor and marketer. You’ll probably have to go to a printing press for mass production but you’ll have to pay for that with your own money as well. From the ordinary book writer, you are now given the distinction of being an independent publisher.

It is a gamble and the stakes are higher because you’re going to invest in your own material. But it can be  lucrative if you do it right. Fortunately, the recent advances in technology have allowed self-publishers and anyone who wants to venture into this industry to avail themselves of low-cost publishing techniques.

Print on demand

The internet has allowed for many types of businesses to emerge. Print on demand is just one of the many industries that have managed to create a market through new technology. In this process, the publisher sends in the material he wants reproduced to a POD company. Everything, from the design of the cover and the number of copies will be decided on by the publisher. The POD company will just carry out the request and reproduce the book according to instructions.

With print on demand, you can get your book reproduced into ten copies to be distributed to your friends, or hundreds for the mass market. It’s really your call. All you need to do is submit it to the POD company in a word processing program (.doc or .txt or .pdf format), provide all the instructions and just wait for your books to get delivered to you.

Added tip

Since self-publishing also means dealing with marketing the book on your own, it’s a good idea to set up a website for your book – or at least a personal website that people can visit so they can find out about the books that you’re coming out with. This is one of the best ways to promote your work.
