Cordwainer Smith was the science fiction pen name of Paul M. A. Linebarger, an expert on psychological warfare and China, and my father. I am one of the members of the Cordwainer Smith Foundation, and in 2001, the Foundation created this award. Its purpose is " to focus new light on an important science fiction or fantasy writer whose major work has in recent years fallen into undeserved obscurity." That's a quote from Robert Silverberg, one of our first judges. It is now given annually at a science fiction convention in Boston every year called Readercon.
